10 th March 2009 was a significant and memorable day for all Woodlanders as they had the opportunity to be up, close and personal with the Prime Minister of Singapore!

The Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and his wife, Mdm. Ho Ching visited Woodlands Secondary School on 10 th March 2009 . Some highlights of the visit included sharing of school’s programmes, dialogue sessions with staff and students, classroom lesson observations and view of the school facilities that enhanced teaching and learning.

The Principal and Heads of Department shared the various programmes that provided an enriching experience for the students. They expressed that the Internationalisation and Opportunity Funds benefited their students to go global to places such as Germany which the students would not be able to do so on their own. Mr. and Mrs. Lee’s warmth and friendliness encouraged the student leaders and other students to share their school experience and their overseas experiential learning.

TOTAL DEFENCE DAY 2009 COMMEMORATIVE ACTIVITIES.

Theme: It’s Personal – Play your Part
Tagline: What will you defend?

Commemoration of Total Defence Day took a new meaning in 2009 as all Woodlanders got into action with various forms of activities organized by the National Education Committee. It was an event that was truly engaging, meaningful and which instilled upon each Woodlander the rationale for this event.

The wide variety of events, spearheaded by the Committee coupled with the assistance from various departments of the school, ensured that students are engaged with varying medium to heighten their interest. As an interested stakeholder, NEnvoys contributed to the planning and carrying out of the Rap and Poster Design competition.

These two competitions, which saw commendable participation from all levels, enabled students to exhibit their talents either musically or aesthetically while trying to spread the key messages of the commemoration.

The news in class lesson held during Thursday’s morning assembly also focused on the need for total defence in the country. This was augmented further the following day in the form of a reflection exercise carried out during LAP period.

This was also a day when one key activity organized for the school saw 100% participation from the entire school community. No one was left out, from the students, teaching staff, EAS, even the school cleaners got into the act when they simulated a food rationing exercise. A touch of realism was added when all canteen vendors were closed and vending machines were switched off. Everyone had to ensure that instructions were followed in an orderly fashion to ensure that rations were distributed fairly. The involvement of the uniform groups to maintain law and order and the participation of parent volunteers saw everyone taking this exercise seriously.

The following Monday saw another challenge thrown in to the Woodlands community when the last period before assembly designated as the power shutdown period. The school had to function with existing resources, persevere despite the discomfort experienced and learn to be ready to meet any emergencies in future.

The address by our Principal, Mrs Woo, to explain the nationwide emergency exercise, further entrenched the importance and significance of Total Defence Day. This was quickly followed by a quiz which saw enthusiastic participation from students, particularly when photographs of teachers who have previously served National Service were shared with them.

A mock up of an emergency simulation with representation from all uniform groups and NEnvoys took centre stage halfway during the assembly. Taking students by surprise, the mock up explained the importance for being ever ready. In summary, all Woodlanders had an opportunity to experience first-hand the various activities carried out to commemorate this important event.

An Enriching Trip to Shanghai

On 5 Feb 2009, three of our pupils represented Singapore St John Ambulance Brigade at the Asian Young Leaders’ Convention held at Shanghai .

Despite the activity taking place during term time, the girls received strong support from the school as it was an opportunity not to be missed.

At the convention, the girls attended a series of leadership workshops, dialogue sessions as well as team-building activities. Keynote speakers of the convention included Mr Zhu Hong Fu, Mayor of Tong Xiang City, Mr Zhang Guo Liang, Principal of Qiu Shi Experimental Middle School in Shanghai, Mr Chen Wei Hong, Principal of Tong Xiang City Party School, Mr Shen Ming Hu, General Manager of Zhejiang Tong Hui Dyeing & Finishing Pte Ltd as well as Mr Yap Meen Sheng, Assistant Director, Character Development/Assistant Director, Uniformed Groups. The girls were exposed to a myriad of experiences as they not only got a chance to work closely with delegates from various schools in Singapore but also young leaders from other Asian countries.

During the trip, the participants also had the chance to visit some tourist attractions in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province , for example the Shanghai Urban Redevelopment Authority, Shanghai World Financial Centre and Yu Hua Zhuang Ecological Park. It was all in all a memorable experience for them who engaged in intellectual discussions as well as immersed in the rich culture of China .

On the last day of the trip, it was with sadness that girls parted with their newly made friends.

A Meaningful Chinese New Year

This year’s Chinese New Year Celebration was varied and meaningful. The Mother Tongue Department organized two competitions, namely, the Best Decorated Classroom as well as the Best Wrapped Hamper contests. The classroom decoration contest was judged on 22 January 2009 and the hamper wrapping contest was conducted on the Chinese New Year Celebration Day itself ( 23 January 2009 ). The two contests promoted the values of caring for the environment and sharing with the needy amongst the students.

First of all, for the Best Decorated Classroom contest, this year’s “Recycle” theme aligned itself with the National Education (NE) agenda and students were tasked to adopt recycled materials as classroom decorations. As the students proceeded with the decorations, they learned about the importance of conserving the environment and how seemingly worthless items such as empty cans and old newspapers could be transformed into valuable and attractive ornaments.

Secondly, the Best Wrapped Hamper contest also encouraged the students to spread warmth and joy to others in this festive period. All the teachers and students donated food items for the hamper contest, and the hampers were then donated to the Christalite Methodist Home. Besides cultivating our students’ thinking skills and creativity, the contests also provided teachable moments for them as they learnt the importance of communal living and that everyone has a part to contribute for the place they live in, as well as to care for the people they live amongst.

Besides partaking in the contests, prior to the actual Celebration Day, students performing for the celebration concert also rehearsed diligently. The school permeated with a jubilant atmosphere where every race and creed immersed in an unique bonding experience. On the Celebration Day itself, the student MCs were confident and at ease as they took over the day’s proceedings. The three MCs wished everyone a Happy Chinese New Year using multiple languages which illustrated our school’s unique multicultural background. The main highlight of the celebrations was the lion dance performance . This year, the school invited ex-students to perform the lion dance item. The performance was brilliant and the audience responded with cheers and loud applause. At the same time, the audience also thoroughly enjoyed the repertoire of light hearted Chinese songs which were performed by some of the current students during the celebration. The audience was mesmerized by the creativity and light-hearted moments of the entire performance sequence and gave the performers rousing receptions.

Before the day ended, in a coordinated effort that involved teachers and students alike, the NE envoys and the teachers sent 45 hampers to the appreciative residents of our neighbour, the Christalite Methodist Home. The day truly ended, on a note of caring and sharing, which certainly represented what being a Woodlander is all about.
